Babes Who Boss Feature: Kaeley Youd

Babes Who Boss Feature: Kaeley Youd

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m Kaeley, the pillow version of a crazy cat lady you could say.. I am the designer, creator, and donut lover behind Kaekoo Pillow Shop. I am freckly, happy and a chronic oversharer. I am a strong believer in celebrating what makes us unique and I hope that shines through in my designs. A couch full of the same pillows isn’t as beautiful as one where each pillow is free to stand out on it’s own. I am a proud Mamma to 3 busy little boys.

What got you interested in this field?

My love affair with sewing started as a young girl. It began watching my Mom sew and sorting through her clothing patterns from the 70’s and unknowingly learning a skill that would eventually grow into running my own handmade shop. I always had a flair for Interior Design and it felt organic to mesh that together with my desire to create beautiful things.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Because pillows are one of the last layers to a space, I find myself inspired by the seasons and how I want my home to “feel” when I’m there. Whether it’s fresh and bright in the spring, or cozy and warm in the fall, my pattern, fabric choice and color combinations start to reflect the mood I am going for.

What advice do you have for aspiring #babeswhoboss?

Allow yourself room to grow WITH your business. As prepared or unprepared you feel when you take the leap to start, know, no one has it all figured out on day one or even at year one or five. As your business changes, new challenges and opportunities come and you naturally rise to meet them. You will surprise even yourself, I was! You are never short in what you need to be successful because you can find success in learning.

Can you think of one challenge you faced before/when starting your business? How did that help you grow?

I knew my market of home goods was saturated. At first I wondered how I could sell my pillow when you could shop a million others. Instead of chasing trends which seemed daunting to compete with, I decided to pave my own way by making my own patterns. It pushed me to create only what I loved, to be myself and design something totally unique.

Who is a #bossbabe you look up to?

Jenny Komenda has always inspired me, even before I started my own business. I first found her blog, then instagram and found that not only did I relate to her as a fellow Mom but I could tell she loved what she did. The homes and spaces she designs just have the word “happy” written all over them. @jennykomenda
